The Zack Brown Band [WINNER]

A lot of people over social media were asking, “who is Fun”?

For most that are not music obsessed, they probably didn’t think they knew the band, until they hear some of their hits; “We Are Young” (featuring Janelle Monáe), “Some Nights,” and “Carry On”.

“We Are Young” reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and Digital charts. It peaked at number one on the UK Singles Chart, as well. “Some Nights” was released as the album’s second single in June 2012, peaking at number three on the Hot 100 chart and becoming Fun’s second Top 10 single, as well as the band’s second song to reach platinum status in the United States.  But before all that…… it is interesting to see the song’s journey.

It was recorded as the focus track for  Fun.’s  second album, Some Nights.  The track initially only gained attention from online media until it got a break on WDHA-FM serving the New Jersey listing area during the October 2, 2011 edition of Anything Anything with Rich Russo.   The tipping point was when the song was covered and performed on the television show GLEE.  Basically if you are a no name musician and you need a break….if you can catch the attention of Glee and get your song licensed – things become much much easier.

That cover of “We Are Young” by the Glee cast lead to success on the charts and exposure.  Then it was quickly scooped up and licensed during back to back Superbowls in 2012 and 2013 to Chevrolet and Taco Bell respectivly.  Anybody watch the Super Bowl?  Ah yes, then you heard this anthem song in the background of the Taco Bell commercial [fun fact – it was adapted into spanish for the ad], which got rave reviews (showing the elderly people partying it up and getting inked).

The single propelled the band into mainstream success, topping the digital charts in February 2012 and becoming a crossover hit, peaking at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 through airplay on contemporary hit radio stations, topping the chart for six weeks straight.  It is also the first song to log seven weeks of 300,000 or more in digital sales, a record that was previously held by Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie” (2010).

But wait there’s more!  The promotion of this single didn’t just stop there…..  “We Are Young” was performed at the 2011 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, the American late night television show Conan, and was used as the opening song at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards. The song is featured in the music video game, Rock Band Blitz.

And so…..the little song that could; did, and won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year and won the band another Grammy for Best New Artist.

The End.
